Clowe, Purcell And Friends Golf Classic A Success In Newfoundland – Updated With Video
For the past five years, Tampa Bay Lightning forward Teddy Purcell and Devils forward Ryane Clowe have hosted a golf tournament in their home province. The event has grown to include a number of NHLers who hail from Newfoundland and beyond. A memorabilia auction concludes the festivities with the proceeds primarily going to Choices for Youth. Choices for Youth is a non-profit community-based agency that provides housing and lifestyle development supports to youth in St. John’s, NL.
The evening before the round of golf, a fan night was held at a local gymnasium that gave hockey fans a chance to come by and get autographs from the players. Some of the notable attendees were James Neal, Michael Ryder, and Adam Pardy.
Tampa Bay was represented by Purcell and Steven Stamkos. Former Bolts Steve Downie and Dominic Moore also took part. This year’s tournament raised more than $120,000 helping them reach their goal of $500,000 in five years.
One of the lasting images of the day came from the Newfoundland Chocolate Company tent. The chocolate makers had special truffles named after all of the NHL teams represented. A twitter photo captured Stamkos enjoying the Lightning truffle. Gary Roberts is sure to make him pay for that little treat.
