Martin St. Louis To Play 1,000th NHL Game In LA
Another milestone in Tampa Bay Lightning history will be written during tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. Tampa’s captain, Martin St. Louis is set to play in his 1,000th career NHL game at the Staples Center this evening. St. Louis’ story is one that Lightning fans are very familiar with. A phenom for the
University of Vermont Catamounts, he went undrafted out of college before landing with the Calgary Flames. After a brief time that saw him fighting for ice time, Calgary bought out his contract and he became an unrestricted free agent. St. Louis signed with Tampa Bay and made his debut for the franchise on October 8th 2000. He hasn’t looked back since.
It’s been an amazing ascent for a player once deemed too small to excel on this level. His resume speaks for itself. The Stanley Cup, two Art Ross Trophies, three Lady Byng Memorial Trophies, the Hart Memorial Trophy and the Lester B. Pearson Award. Marty has been named to the NHL All-Star team six times. He has 348 goals and 932 points. Perhaps the most impressive thing of all is that the 38 year old, diminutive right winger shows little signs of slowing down. Almost two months into the 2013-14 season he has eight goals and 20 points in 20 games.
A lot has been written about St. Louis being the “heart and soul” of the Lightning. So much so that it almost seems to border on a cliché. It’s not, though. Since the start of the 2002-03 season, Marty has missed seven of 724 regular season games. He’s dependable, durable, and a player who has the ability to put a team on his back and carry them forward. He’s meant so much to this team which is why it was so touching to see him named its captain earlier this year.
More than half of all NHL players log less than 100 games during their career. This brevity is one of the reasons why a player reaching 1,000 games is so special.
Congratulations, Marty! Everyone is looking forward to celebrating with you next week after the road trip.
